Expedition Notes - A Meteorite Fall

Expedition Notes We eventually found a second impact site. We had whittled our suspects down to a single possibility; a skimmer... Perched alongside the edifice of the Hamar L'Aghdad was the rugged expanse of the Western Desert in Morocco, which has captivated many an explorer for centuries. When the conditions are favourable, one may be lucky enough to locate curious fossils such as trilobites. These can be found in a handful of mountain ranges which penetrate into the fringes of Algeria and the Enormous Sahara. The Tenéré Desert provides befitting conditions to gain from the pastel offerings. After driving for hours off road, we were half way through our nine hour breakneck odyssey.   We laboriously lugged all the tools and filming gear up a steep mountainside in the dazzling sunlight and beyond the immediate view lay a hidden mystery. The sun had risen defiantly when something rather extraordinary piqued our interest. With bated breath, we hastened our steps towards an area that embraced a paleontological ethos - welcome too THE FOSSIL STORE ≈     Shop the latest extraterrestrial Meteorites For Sale THE FOSSIL STORE™ proudly presents a selection of stunningly discovered meteorites. Luxury Holzmaden Fossils For Sale

Shop the latest fossils for sale with our latest editions of Holzmaden fossils from lilies to ammonites from the famous region, Holzmaden. Holzmaden in Baden-Württemberg, South-Western Germany, a small town which has a world-renowned reputation among palaeontologists having a wealth of prehistoric life entombed in fossil oil shale layers. These layers stretch under and around the local region and through the small hamlet established circa 1671 when records show the number of inhabitants was just a mere forty-three souls. The geological area around Holzmaden contains layers of well-preserved fossils (or Lagerstätten), from the Jurassic period, these 180 million-year-old Posidonia Shales, which include exceptionally well preserved and in some instances complete remains of fossil fish, marine reptiles, ammonites and the impressive crinoids, is well known. The museum Hauff dedicating exhibits of large plates full of Seironcrinus subangular crinoid heads and stems can be found in the town. The Posidonienschiefer formation (as it is known to German palaeontologists), takes its name from the ubiquitous fossils of Posidonia bronni which characterize the fauna of this region of Jurassic time. The formation comprises of laminated layers of oil shales formed of fine-grained sediment intercalated with bituminous limestones which outcrop in several locations of the region, although most are found in the vicinity of the town. These dark shales create highly decorative fossil plates, the mineral contents of the region also contain iron pyrites, these pyrites in the form of 'fools gold' deposits create wonderful iridescence which has been in some cases absorbed by the fossils, this differential between dark shales and golden flowery fossil heads on long stems swaying in forgotten ancient currents creates a romantic scene from antiquity. Highly sort after by collectors and the interior decorator trade, this enthusiasm coupled with the quarries sites being now protected has created a deficient supply not meeting a new demand and so creating a desirable fossil for investors cashing in on the fossil windfall. The Posidonia Shale quarry of Jurassic age lie near the town and are the most famous for having produced in the past the most wonderful crinoid plates. The Ancient world museum (Urweltmuseum) in Holzmaden has several exhibits of the fossil from a tropical past, including marine reptiles, ammonoids, and crinoids. Nowadays heritage laws protect these fossils and there collecting, although a private quarry still operates near the museum and invites the visitor to hire equipment and to try your hand at fossicking for the ancient fossils of the Jurassic. Although each find will be examined by museum staff and retained for the museum if deemed of importance for the national collections. In recent years these long-established German favourites have reached fossil shows and displays around the globe. The fossil store has included large plates into renowned auction houses in England, where the presence of the highly decorate fossils did not go unnoticed by investors and collectors. In the area of the auction rooms plates started to reach higher and higher prices, the demand outstripped the supply of fossil plates from old collections, which lay in Germany. Once these have been all extinguished prices will continue to rise as supply cannot continue. So the basic rules of desirability and quality outstrip the issue of the price ticket. These enigmatic fossil flowers, as often they are described, will continue to intrigue and delight buyers and onlookers and should steadily increase in value. The fact that the fossils are rarer than gold will not go unnoticed by the savvy investor with an interest in natural history, palaeontology, and ancient art, looking for diversity in a portfolio, or just to admire on the wall as natural art. Climate Positive Workforce with Ecologi

Planting trees to help our planet  ꕤ THE FOSSIL STORE plants a tree for every order received. This helps us to recover more than our own 'carbon footprint' used throughout our resources from fabrication processes and manufacturing to transportation of our products. 100 trees helps restore CO₂ emissions for a London to San Francisco return flight totalling 8619.80 KM, equivalent to 0.15119 KG per KM of CO₂ per person - total flight emissions for one person is 1303.23 KG [1.3 tonnes] based on UK government (GGR) greenhouse gas reports. " Ecologi perfectly resonates with our company ethos and we couldn't be prouder to be apart of this movement " - The Fossil Store Team Our collective home is in the process of being turned upside down which is leading to strife for almost all life on Earth. So, it is up to us to solve it - Reducing our carbon footprint is entirely necessary, but the transition of change is slower than the time that remains. The tools that we associate with fighting climate change are inadequate. What if that changed and the billions of us who care became empowered? There are enough climate solutions out there right now, that if we all supported them, it’d undo 30 years of carbon damage by avoiding 1,500 billion tonnes of CO2. This is our opportunity!

Because the benthic level of the sea lacked a great concentration of oxygen the biota of the oceans once deposited post-mortem on the seafloor did not decay quickly, oxygen-loving bacteria did not form and decay the tissue of sea creatures like lilies. Low oxygen loving Algae forms and produces sulphates which released hydrogen sulphates as a by-product, thus further bacterial breakdown releases sulphur and combined with iron minerals which forms iron pyrite. GOLD + BLACK HOLZMADEN ORIGINS Holzmaden, Baden-Württemberg, lies near Stuttgart in southwestern Germany. It is noted for the European oil shales deposited on a seafloor during the Early Toarcian. Formations of finely laminated layers of oil shales and finely grained sediments intercalated with bituminous limestones, these are the Lagerstätten or Posidonia Shale (Posidonienschiefer) and named after the discovery of a bivalve the Posidonia bronni and was also initially named after this P. bronni bivalve. The Posidonia Shale out-crop in a number of locations in southwestern Germany, many layers near the village of Holzmaden were mined for bituminous shales for the production of electricity and cement. Lily Genus: Seirocrinus Subangularis.Age: Jurassic, 180,000,000 years.Origin: Holzmaden, Posidonia, Germany. The fauna of the Posidonia shales forms a myriad of Jurassic marine life of the Toarcian stage, at this point approximately one hundred and eighth million years ago the seas teemed with large vertebrate reptiles chasing prey. Among the prey of ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs flying reptiles, the pterosaurs glided over the surface of the waters hopeful of a meal. below in the water column pelagic cephalopods hunted above floating crinoids a sub-form of the animal looking like a plant with grasping arms reminiscent of a terrestrial flower and so-known as the sea lilies and at the benthic levels crustaceans eked out an existence foraging early forms of worms borrowing through the low oxygenated sediments. THE HISTORY The fossil shales of the Jurassic, Toarcian stage some 180,000,000 years ago formed part of the ancient Tethys Ocean and the deposition of sediments creating the oil shales and the fall of fossils therein were deposited and fossilised in an anoxic-oxygen deprived deepwater environment, containing rare fossils from the Jurassic era. Marine vertebrate fossils, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs, ammonites and crinoids. The Holzmaden (Posidonia shale deposits) are of worldwide importance because of the unique formation and the discovery of skin cover showing parts of fossilised fauna rarely seen in the fossil record generally. Only a few fossil depositions have such an environment to finely preserve its fossil treasures. The Posidonia Shale fossils can be found at the Museum Hauff, Holzmaden, as well as museums around the world.    Fossil crinoids of the Poseidon shales featured by the fossil store in exhibitions around Britain and beyond. The plates make excellent features, the crisp detail of feathery floret arms, golden hues of ‘fools gold’ in the form of iron pyrite set contrastingly against black to very dark grey Holzmaden shale is delightful. These plates now a premier fossil decor feature are becoming increasingly more uncommon. The naturally formed and tactile shale containing shellfish of the Jurassic have arrived on the fossil interior scene. The striking complete phragmacone's (shells) of the enormous pelagic ocean molluscs are preserved and conserved beautifully in plate issues. The plates can be hung to create an accompaniment to or an alternative of the sea lilies of the Poseidon theme. We can form and supply from sublime fossil mountings an accent to match your interior. Contact us for more information.  AESTHETIC We offer custom designed brackets for wall display exclusively for The Fossil Store products, this additional cost finishes off your piece of interest, with a waiting time that allows our in-house team to design a CAD drawing for a more precise execution with the fabrication process to procure the very best support for your interior wall and new found fossil specimen. Interior-Styled Ammonites

Interior Design and Ammonites on Plinths, somehow their familiar. Fossil ammonites, the ancient prehistoric marine dwelling cephalopods send powerful and remaining images to our subconscious self. It is something inert, in fact it could be the relationship to the inner ear which has a similar form the 'membranous labyrinth' are a series of concentrical tubes containing fluid aiding hearing and balance, similar to a whorl or helix spiral, the author's sensibilities here gravitate to theorising this relationship in the human body is a ancient genetic link to the lineage of our earliest beginnings, that the whorl’s of ammonites are subconsciously and inertly known to us all. the ancients venerated the whorling symmetry mirrored in the Egyptian god Amun, the rams headed God is amongst other powerful imagery which throughout and since historical time has stayed with us through to today. The ancient Greek Ionic capital can be found in many media designs, not just on ancient buildings and monuments, look out for the helix or spiral on business cards, advert boards, the web and on your screens, it comes up quite often. View Interior Design and Ammonites on Plinths. Another ancient image the helix spiral has had an enormous benefit to human society, The Archimedes screw, a device enabling water to be transported to different levels, a meteoric advancement in ancient agriculture, thought to have been developed in the Hellenistic period 325-30BC. The Archimedes device uses the helix spiral to transport liquid from lower or higher levels, an aid to irrigation of multi-level environments and has a likeness to the whorl shells of ancient cephalopods. The Cephalopoda group, the ammonites used gaseous chambers to move and rise and fall in the depths of the ocean. What we have hopefully achieved in using this familiar natural element and ancient symbols, which simultaneously are dynamic, visually powerful and distinctive, is to breath new life into our ammonites on plinths and present them in a way which makes the extinct prehistoric form accessible and useful in modern and alternative styles of interior design. That is something we are proud to have initiated decades ago, our team continues to produce a product in a specialised and quality-driven market. We have strived to experiment and diversify our designs when called upon, to do so for projects for ocean-going yachts and luxury hotels at home and as far afield as Arabia to Australia, in fact from monumental interior fossil sculpture to bookends our designs have featured globally. We hope you enjoy browsing our interior design and ammonites on plinths selection. So when you're out in the world to keep an open eye out for the helix spiral. We also take commissions on size and style requirements, your design, your piece of history!

Quartz minerals decor

From monumental amethyst crystal cavern over four feet tall. Amethyst is the birthstone of February, has been venerated since the times of ancient Greece 'The Greek word amethystos may be translated as not drunken', vessels made from amethyst were thought to prevent intoxication. Quartz minerals originate from all over the world, Brazil, Madagascar and many more countries, one in particular, England. England is very well known for its Flourite and polished minerals, these are particularly rare for they are rather stunning in colour and large for their size, however, these are protected and it is not advised to collect in the United Kingdom for they are protected. There are many other countries from which you can buy Fluorite, but these laws may change making them all the rarer. So if you have a collection, hold them close, for their value is only sure to increase.

#1 Megalodon Teeth Selections / Top 1-10% Best Teeth In The World

Megalodon Shark, the fiercest predator of its time in the ocean. In the Miocene and Pliocene periods approximately 16 to 3 million years ago this monster shark would hunt other sharks, fishes and even sperm whales, cetaceans 23 million years ago to now. Whale vertebrae have been discovered with gouge marks made from the huge teeth of Carcharodon Megalodon shark.    Sizing up Megalodon. In 1996 teeth measurements taken on a 6.6-inch tooth by Michael D. Gottfried, Leonard Compagno and S. Curtis Bowman were extrapolated to give an estimated size of 52 feet overall length for a large adult Megalodon. The largest tooth since this extrapolation study that we have knowledge of was approximately 7.1 inches, this then could give a shark well over 60 feet in length. The Megalodon could have attained a mass weight at these sizes of 50 to 60 tonnes and possibly as much as 65 tonnes. Its bite force would have been around 6 times greater than that of the largest modern Great White shark. To give an idea of just how impressive Megalodon mass or size was, the teeth of the modern-day and most feared shark in our oceans, the Great White are an average of 1.5 inches, so Megalodon at 6 to 7 inches is perhaps likening the size relationship of that of a cat to a lion. Think of a modern Great White, as large or larger than a whale shark with a 10-foot gaping jaw full of hundreds of teeth and an insatiable appetite for flesh. A typical shark has around 200 teeth, teeth were grown throughout the life of the shark, much like today’s sharks, these rotated forward as the teeth were lost or broken away. The teeth were left in their victims, much like the whale vertebra found with bite marks or fell to the seabed where modern-day specialist fossil teeth divers now discover them. Most of our collection of Megalodon teeth are discovered in South Carolina, by divers collecting each tooth by hand from the heavily silted murky bottom, which is co-inhabited with crocodiles along the waterways. These waters produce black and battleship grey teeth. In North Carolina, beautiful mahogany coloured teeth can be found. From Patagonia ivory-toned teeth. Our collection of fine and large Carcharodon Megalodon shark teeth show the typical features to be found in these bulky palm-sized specimens. Good serrations are the most important factor along with completeness of the triangular form of the tooth and finally the enamel surface when investing in Megalodon teeth. Like a fine stamp, all these three things must be in place to attain the best and rarest of teeth and hence most collectable and valuable.

The Nautilus

Here a fabulous Nautilus from Madagascar has been set onto our custom bronze mount, the mount is not fixed to the specimen, the fossil sits securely in the cradle frame and can be easily removed for study. The legend accompanying this fossil reads as follows Genus type: Cymatoceras sakalavus, Age: Albian stage 113 - 100 m.y.a, Period: Cretaceous period, 135 to 65 m.y.a., Origin: Mahajanga region, N.E. Madagascar. E.Africa, South Indian Ocean. The custom bronze mount, part of our classic range, compliments every fossil and mineral element chosen for surmounting, this is the art of THE FOSSIL STORE™ derived from a historic background working with fine art and objects of antiquity. Each object is appraised and a base mount handmade to fit comfortably and uniquely with every exhibit. Below shows a stout and heavy surmounted fossil goniatite resting elegantly on the aesthetically slender support, thus creating an air of lightness to the mount and therefore the setting of minimal design does not overpower the fossil feature. We refer to these types of mounts as our classic range, deriving inspiration from the classical sculptures of the ancient world. Like a series of Greek or Roman torso's and sculptured heads, these ammonoids stand equal in dramatic gravity and chic style.

Survival Of The Crocodile!

The ancient crocodile! It's incredible that millions of years ago crocodiles like the Dyrosaurus we're roaming the margins of lagoons and brackish waters, even marine adaptions occur alongside dinosaurs. If they could tell their story... According to a variety of studies in recent years, crocodiles were very different reptiles to the ones we are familiar with today with more diverse adaptable abilities. Their evolution and anatomical variation during the Mesozoic Era were remarkable, having to evolve lifestyles and feeding habits unlike anything in our time today. Variable examinations on the shape and biomechanical function of the lower jaws in over 100 ancient crocodiles during the Mesozoic period which began 251 million years ago and covered over 170 million years. Show these studies reveal the ancient crocodiles invaded the Jurassic seas and evolved jaws built primarily for water efficiency, streamline narrow gharial types which course through currents more efficiently aiding speed and the capture of agile prey like fish. Also evolving a variety of lower jaw shapes during the Cretaceous Period, 145 million to 65 million years ago as they adapted to a diverse range of niche environments alongside the competing dinosaurs, including vegetation. Surprisingly, the lower jaws of Cretaceous crocodiles did not have a huge amount of variation, the fossil records point toward novel adaptations in other anatomical areas, such as armadillo-like body armour. Dr Stephanie Pierce, from the Royal Veterinary Association quoted; ‘Our results show that the ability to exploit a variety of different food resources and habitats, by evolving many different jaw shapes, was crucial to recovering from the end-Triassic extinction and most likely contributed to the success of Mesozoic crocodiles living in the shadow of the dinosaurs.’ It is also believed that crocodiles were able to run like dogs millions of years ago, enabling them to scavenge and avoid predators with perhaps a little more ease. We’re slightly surprisingly however as records show, modern crocodiles can only run up to speeds of 11 mph, whereas alligators can reach speeds of 25 mph in short bursts. A 3D fossilised crocodile jaw 3D Dyrosaurus Crocodile Snout showing remarkable preservation and condition. This important Dyrosaurus phosphatic crocodile snout displays a host of teeth, all of which are fully articulated and situated firmly within there authentic positions within the jaws. Both maxilla and mandible clenched together in the vice grip of the marine reptile. often during the fossilisation process's teeth are lost, with this particular example the partial snout clearly evokes the predatory nature of the cretaceous apex predator, the teeth being fixed tightly together, having been fixed since deposition in the fossil slits which have become phosphatic limestone. Thus allowing a remarkably rare event and preserving the whole section of this snout. Crocodile origin The Tethyan phosphate trend sprawls across North Africa and the Middle East and is mined in several countries. The Moroccan portion of the trend is presently the most exploited, producing about 19 million tonnes or 14% of the global supply [1980 figures], making this one of Morocco main industries. All mining is state-owned by the Office Cherifien des Phosphates [OCP]. The plateaux in the region there are 3-5 main outcrops of phosphate beds. Around the area of Kouribga, the Oulad-Abdoun plateau has been mined since the 1920s. The Ganntour plateau to the south has been mined for many years. A new mine in the central area of this deposit at Ben Guerir was commissioned in 1981. Hence the recent discoveries since this date of numerous fossils.
